Book Quote on Money

"If we can’t respect the way we earned it.. Money has no value...
If we can’t use it to make life better for our families and loved ones, money has no purpose.."

Book Review of " City of Girls " by Elizabeth Gilbert

#City of Girls

Life is both fleeting and dangerous, and there is no point in denying yourself pleasure, or being anything other than what you are”

City of Girls is a fiction narrated from an older woman perspective in response to a letter from “Angela” asking about the protagonist’s (Vivian’s) relationship with her father (Angela’s father)

The story took us to New York City and Theater life of 1940s… The main lead – Vivian shares the story of her youth which is a detailed description of the theater where she used to work with her aunt Peg, how her parents considered her not so (maybe not at all) valuable as compared to their other child, her relationship or the lack of it with her brother (Walter) who later was killed during a navy operation in war, how she valued her aunt (Peg) more than a family and various other characters that walked in and out of her life during the theater days and afterwards when she starts a business of sewing wedding gowns.

It also depicts in a very delicate and unconventional love that she shares with Angela’s father in which the closest that they get to each other physically is touching the hand and yet share the deepest love.

It also talks really often about the more or less “meaningless sex” that Vivian continues to have with other men and how she is open and vocal about it as she has made peace with the kind of person she is and the preferences she has despite the social norms being otherwise.

Quoting from the book:

“At one point in a woman’s life, she is tired of being ashamed all the time”

In my view, the book is similar in many other book about a female protagonist carving her own way of life in a not so accepting society and having sex with multiple partners... The key difference, however, is the settings in which Vivian operates – be it New York City, war backdrop, unconventional theater characters…

The book is worth one time read while on a long vacation!

Aam Aurat

Aam Aurat : 2013

2013 : An year of unlearning and learning fresh - how we moved beyond the 2 equally ineffective governance options for Delhi, how the faith & power of democracy was re-established in Delhi Legislative Assembly elections with the naïve inexperienced yet honest bunch emerging as the strongest contenders of our city

While on one hand we saw the protests by Aam aadmi for their rights, for unfulfilled demands, for giving the power in the hand of common man ; we also saw that women on the other hand had also decided that they will no longer remain quiet and fight for their rights.

The bus- rape case, the journalist in Mumbai, females filmed in Delhi High Court restroom, harassment cases in Mumbai locals – all decided to go loud this time and fight for justice. Though this raises a question in our mind as the “reported incidences” increased drastically, I genuinely believe that we have moved atleast one step ahead where we now know more of what is actually happening and can then address these issues that have made us afraid of "men" in general

Moving into the next year, I wish all the girls & ladies out there to take good care of their safety before finalising new year bash plans

Wishing you all a very happy, healthy and safe 2014... :)

Delhi Girl !

The title paints a picture for itself...and all delhi girls are considered coming out from the same mould ! Many a times, in my casual conversations with my friends(who are mostly non-delhite) i come across the phrase "delhi girls are like that....."

I have always wondered if there is a proper, standard, acceptable by all definition of a Delhi Girl..?

Is she the one who has always called a neighbourhood guy 'bhaiya' or one who has experienced exchanging archies cards , notes and other stuff since she was 14 ! Is she someone who is just happy with her gals and is sure of tying the knots with whosoever her parents choose or the one who has lost count in the past that is full of relationships.....

Is she someone who has bunked school and smoked even before giving her boards?

Or she she someone from one of the influential political family and gets away with anything by saying "you just dont know who i am".

Is she one arranging booze parties for freshers in a happ college OR is she the fully clad , ponytailed girl going to one of the not so happening DU College

Is she the graduate teacher , post graduate management student, engineering diploma holder, Doctor from Aiims, DCE passout, LSR passout , Media or journalism student from JNU hip-hopping between college and other courses, One preparing for IIT in Jiasarai or katwariasarai area or one waiting for civil services final result.

I have always found it difficult to club them all in one but i really appreciate the efforts of one who has done that with minimum thought and time involved !

Rajdhani

Yes, the restaurant lived upto its name.....

Nahh, i am not talking about the rajdhani's gujarati food , the thali , buffet or the ambience... i am talking about how it made me come back to Rajdhani!(Delhi)

It was a tiring day, when i had no food (obviously cooked!) at home and was in no mood to do the cooking(not that i am an expert chef but can help myself out).. So, while coming back from my office at Andheri , i called a friend and asked if he would like to go out for dinner. and he readily agreed(A friend in need is a friend indeed was the philosophy he believed in :)..will write soon about him too ). So, we went to the Mall : Inorbit or Oberoi...i dont remember.. i guess Inorbit only and placed ourselves in the Oh-So-Famous Rajdhani Hotel. We obviously ordered 2 thalis.. and started indulging ourselves in the variety of colourful welcome drinks...

And so when we were done with the As-Much-As You Can Eat Dinner, we hardly had an idea of what will happen the next day! We went back to our respective homes only to wake up at around mid-night to that horrible stomach ache. Still, being loyal and faithful to our resp. companies(no,no its not about my pet dogs but me! ), we went to our office.....

Late evening: Homeopathic Doctor

Early Morning Next Day : Got admitted.... food poisoning....

Afternoon: Friends and Colleagues came for visiting...

Late Evening : Mom Rushed in...

After 3 days : Boss referred my case to Head HR and helped with my transfer to Delhi.

After 10 days : Reached Home !

And so Rajdhani worked in its own nice way of getting me back to home! And also made me realise that its not everyone you think who would be there when you need them the most... My friend's colleagues: Rupali and Steve: People i had seen for the first time were more than helpful and my near and dear ones(yes , i am pointing out to one person in particular) was least bothered.

Family always is an exception and holds you throughout..

Neways, that is a separate story... Not that its always the same in Rajdhani as i have myself been there many times before and after this incident...

That was mid June of 2010 and now it is mid july of 2011... but still i remember the pain of making rice for yourself for eating curd-rice when you are suffering from stomach ache and obviously cannot order outside food... The wish to be at home at that time was so strong that i hardly looked at or thought of the other side of d scene.......
